If you enjoy reading, then Book Club 1 has a recommendation for you!

For the first time since we started, one month we all agreed unanimously on 5/5 and decided that this book is the best one we have read as a group. Consequently we recommend it highly to you all:

Jodi Picoult – The Storyteller

It is a compelling read, it draws you in and is very well researched. It certainly is a story which will stay with you ..... _Sage leads a lonely sheltered life as a baker following the death of her mother. She discovers that

one of the few people that she has allowed into her life, (they both attend the same group for those who are grieving) claims to be a former high-ranking SS official.

Our Club reads one book every month, using the Lincoln Library Services and we meet at Long Sutton Library to review what we have read. We then rate each one from 1 – 5, accepting that our overall view for each book will vary. We respect each other’s differing views. We have been meeting since September 2017 and did not let Covid stop us - we have met on Zoom since the first lockdown and are looking forward to meeting together in person.

Picture and report from May's 2018 Meeting

We were reviewing our month’s book - Julie Summers “Jambusters” about the Women's Institute (WI) in World War 2 particularly. One of our members brought along something of relevant interest to the book. She inherited from a relative a bag containing various maps of European countries printed in colour on silk and folded small to fit in a bag the size of a purse. Apparently he was a navigator on a plane and these were probably his emergency maps for use if he crashed in Europe during the war.

Picture and report from April's 2018 Meeting

This month the Book group met to discuss Kate Adie's "Fighting on the Home ] Front". One of our group members produced an item referred to in Kate’s book - a brass tin from the First World War. The tin has been in the member's family since then. Apparently, Princess Mary (17 year old daughter of George V) wanted all forces personnel both on sea and on land at Christmas 1914, to receive a gift on Christmas day. She set up a public appeal and then organised the embossed tins which were sent to the personnel. Tin contents varied slightly eg most contained tobacco but there were sweets for non-smokers. They also had a Christmas card, a photo of Princess Mary and a pencil.

The Book Club

Using the Lincolnshire Library services' excellent support the book club receives 12 books a year, a new one each month. The titles are selected by the group members at the start of the year. This costs each member just over £3 per year.

At the two-hour monthly meeting we discuss the book just read, giving it a rating. The book is then returned to the Library Services and the next month's book is distributed.

The book club chose to meet at Long Sutton Library, where the welcoming staff provide tea/coffee and biscuits at each meeting ( a small 50p donation is given by each member which the library use to provide children’s equipment in the library). The ambience of the library is perfect for a book group!
